![]() If collectors aren't satisfied with the design choices, they can tell the Queen that the doll designed in her likeness and approved by her does not meet their glamor standards. We'd have to ask Robert Best and the rest of the design team for more details on the discussion and design process. It's just as likely that if she was feeling especially capricious, Her Majesty could have just as easily demand that the doll be dressed in the uniform she wore as an auto mechanic during WWII. Clearly, the Queen signed off on the doll we got, and it's likely that her appearance at her coronation was offered as potential design. For example, some collectors expressed disappointment at Queen Elizabeth II's doll portraying her at her current age and in a simpler, but formal dress versus a younger age in her coronation dress. ![]() ![]() So, because of that (and because Mattel seems to prefer the feminine these days and Bowie was famously androgynous anyway), Mattel didn't get the likeness rights from the Estate and, instead, made the two Barbie Signature David Bowie Dolls that they released (because it was more cost effective for Mattel to do so, too)?Īs for what goes on during the design process for dolls based on actual people, we'd have to either ask the person (or their representative(s)) or the designers about the details about why certain dolls turned out the way they did. Ooh! I just thought of another possible reason for why Mattel would choose to make a Barbie Signature Doll in a certain way! You know how collectors were wondering why made Barbie Dolls instead of a actual Ken Dolls that looked like David Bowie for his two dolls?įor example: What if, Mattel asked Iman (isn't she, Bowie's widow, probably the executor of his Estate?) for permission to make a Ken Doll in her late husband's likeness but Mattel didn't want to because it would be more (and maybe too) expensive for them to do so (like, wouldn't Iman and the Estate want Mattel to pay them more money if they made a Ken Doll in his likeness?).
